Auckland winger Arthur McInnarney’s niche in Kiwis history is as the only member of the squad from the abandoned 1939 tour of Britain to represent New Zealand after World War II.

The Mt Albert flyer was one of only five players who did not take the field in the 1939 Kiwis’ two matches in Britain before the outbreak of the war brought the tour to a halt.

Wounded in Italy during WWII, the 31-year-old McInnarney gained a spot on the Kiwis’ 1947-48 tour of Britain and France. He played 17 matches – including a sole Test appearance against Wales in a 28-20 win – and scored four tries, including a double in a 30-3 win over Wakefield Trinity.
