Nelson rugby union convert Pat Hannigan lined up at hooker in New Zealand’s historic 1910 Test against Northern Union.

A representative for Nelson-Marlborough against the Anglo-Welsh tourists in 1908, switched to rugby league with the Alhambra club in 1910 and won selection for the first Test match on New Zealand soil.

Hannigan opposed outstanding Leigh hooker Billy Winstanley in the showdown at Auckland’s Domain Cricket Ground, which Northern Union won 52-20 after trailing 15-10 at halftime.

He turned out for Nelson against Auckland later that season and – after joining the St Mary’s Catholic Club – continued representing the province until 1913.
