Following in the footsteps of older brother Dick, who played one Test in 1932, utility back Charles ‘Jack’ Smith toured with the Kiwis in 1938 and ’39.

Smith was still a teenager when he broke into the North Shore Albions senior team and debuted for Auckland in 1937.

Selected in the New Zealand team to travel to Australia the following season, Smith made eight appearances at fullback, wing and centre, racking up 25 points from five tries and five goals. He crossed for two tries in a 37-18 win over a strong NSW side early in the tour (no Tests were played on the trip).

He was named in the Kiwis’ squad for the tour of Britain in 1939 that was abandoned after three matches due to the outbreak of World War II. Smith made one appearance before the cancellation in a win over Dewsbury.

Smith served in WWII and returned to play for North Shore and represent North Island after the war.
