West Coast’s goalkicking fullback Ray Nuttall toured Britain and France with the 1947-48 Kiwis.

The Blackball and later Runanga custodian was at the back for West Coast’s famous 17-8 victory over England in 1946, before being chosen as Test fullback Warwick Clarke’s understudy for the following season’s New Zealand touring squad.

Though he could not force his way into the Test line-up, Nuttall kicked 22 goals in 10 minor matches after debuting for the Kiwis against Swinton.

Regarded as unlucky to miss the 1948 tour to Australia – Clarke and fellow Aucklander Morris Rich were the selected fullbacks – Nuttall, a South Island regular, later represented West Coast against the 1950 Lions and the 1951 French tourists.
