Veteran Ponsonby halfback Brian Tracey represented New Zealand at the 1972 World Cup.
With Ken Stirling unavailable due to injury, Tracey received the Kiwis call-up and ousted Canterbury’s Graeme Cooksley for the No.7 jersey, partnering Dennis Williams in the halves in the tournament losses to France (20-9), Australia (9-5) and Great Britain (53-19).
The goalkicking playmaker was a key figure in Ponsonby’s dominant, Fox Memorial-winning 1967 and 1972-73 campaigns, while he played for Auckland against NSW Country in 1974. He joined Manukau in 1975 and later coached Te Atatu and Manukau.
