Ponsonby and Papakura forward Brian Lee played nine Tests for New Zealand in an international career spanning eight seasons, travelling abroad with the Kiwis three times.
Lee was just 20 when he represented New Zealand Coaching School against Australia in Christchurch in 1961, earning a spot in the Kiwis’ squad to tour Britain and France at the end of the year. His 14 appearances included lining up in the second-row in the first and third Tests against Great Britain – a win at Headingley and a loss at Station Road, respectively – and the drawn third Test against France in Paris.
Recalled for the 1963 tour of Australia, Lee scored two tries against Newcastle and played prop in the first Test, before reverting to the second-row for the remaining two Test.
Lee captained North Island Māori to a win over France and New Zealand Māori in a victory over NSW Country in 1968, returning to the New Zealand Test team in the latter year for the World Cup. He featured in all three matches of the Kiwis’ winless campaign and was sent off during their opener against France, marched for a high tackle after just 11 minutes of the Carlaw Park encounter.
The veteran represented Auckland against Great Britain in 1970.
