The last player to win selection for the Kiwis while based in the Bay of Plenty, halfback Glenn Donaldson’s tour of Australia and Papua New Guinea was cut short by injury during his debut.

The 1984 Junior Kiwis rep came off the bench for Northern Districts against Great Britain in 1984 and was the team’s halfback against Australia in 1985.

With Clayton Friend ruled out by injury, Donaldson was named as one of two halfbacks with Gary Freeman in New Zealand’s 1986 touring squad. But the 21-year-old – Bay of Plenty’s first Kiwi in 15 years – injured his knee in the first half of the tour opener against Newcastle, ending his tour.

Further international opportunities were not forthcoming with Freeman and Friend ahead of him and the injury troubling him for another two seasons, but Donaldson was again a stalwart for Bay of Plenty and the Central club from 1989-92.
