The University club’s sole Kiwi representative during its short-lived tenure in Canterbury Rugby League’s premier competition, Angus Thompson played one match on the 1972 tour of Australia.

The teak-tough Papanui forward played the first of 15 matches for Canterbury in 1968, his first season in the premier grade, and turned out for South Island against Australia in 1969.

After playing for Rest of New Zealand against a New Zealand XIII in a 1972 trial following his move to University, second-rower Thompson was chosen in the Kiwis’ squad for the three-match trip across the Tasman. He was the only member of the touring party to not feature in either of the two Tests, but he played in the sole minor tour match, a 26-10 loss to NSW Country in Queanbeyan.

Thompson joined Woolston in 1973, the year he made his last appearance for Canterbury.
