Industrious Ponsonby and Auckland second-rower Doug Richards-Jolley played two Tests for New Zealand when he career peaked in the 1951 season.
A Waikato rugby union representative who served in the New Zealand Army from 1945-48, Richards-Jolley was called up to the Kiwis line-up for the one-off Test against the famed 1951 French tourists – partnering Charlie McBride in the second-row against the pairing of Louis Mazon and Martin Martin, who was sent off in the hosts’ 16-15 win.
Richards-Jolley played for Auckland in a 15-10 loss to France two days later before winning selection on the Kiwis’ tour of Britain and France.
He scored a try in his first appearance on tour against Rochdale but an ankle injury wrecked his hopes of playing in the Test series against Great Britain, with Frank Mulcare beginning his long tenure in the Test pack instead and holding the spot for the French leg of the tour.
Nevertheless, Richards-Jolley finished the tour well, including a two-try performance against Toulouse, and made his second Test appearance – in what was his last game for New Zealand – in the loss to British Empire at Stamford Bridge.
Richards-Jolley later represented Auckland against Australia and the American All Stars in 1953, and Auckland and North Island against Great Britain in 1954. He became a New Zealand title-winner in bowls after hanging up the boots.
