Wellington fullback Peter Edwards was part of the Kiwis’ 1993 tour of Britain and France, during which he made one Test appearance off the bench.
The former Manawatu representative moved to Wellington in 1990, breaking into the provincial team there – and featuring in a victory over Great Britain – as well as winning a grand final with Upper Hutt Tigers in his first season.
Edwards played for New Zealand Colts against Papua New Guinea and went to the Pacific Cup with New Zealand Māori in 1992, while he benefitted from the injury unavailability of Matthew Ridge the following season to win selection in the Kiwis’ touring squad. He was one of only two specialist fullbacks chosen, alongside Balmain’s Morvin Edwards (no relation), a former Upper Hutt and Wellington teammate.
The 24-year-old debuted in a loss to Bradford Northern and played six matches on the English leg of the tour, before earning a bench call-up for the one-off Test win over France.
In 1994, Edwards starred for Hutt Valley Firehawks in the inaugural Lion Red Cup and toured Australia with the New Zealand Residents team. He subsequently was part of the Auckland Warriors’ reserve grade line-up during their foundation 1995 season.
Edwards embarked on a long stay in England, switching to the forwards and turning out for Salford (including the 1997-98 Super League seasons), York and Doncaster.
