Born: October 8, 1933 Died: July 15, 2005 Test record: 4 Tests (1955-56) – 1 try, 9 goals (21 points) Tours: 1955-56 tour of Britain and France
Ōtāhuhu fullback Dick Haggie transferred his prolific pointscoring ability to the Kiwis’ 1955-56 tour of Britain and France – playing four Tests – while he was a long-serving member of the New Zealand Māori team.
Haggie was just 19 when he racked up 19 points from a try and eight goals in New Zealand Māori’s 40-23 win over the American All Stars in 1953. He subsequently represented New Zealand Māori against Great Britain in 1954, and New Zealand Māori and Auckland against France in 1955.
Chosen as Roy Moore’s fullback understudy for the trip to Britain and France at the end of 1955, Haggie scored 15 points (one try, six goals) on debut against Blackpool. He featured at fullback in the second Test against Great Britain at Bradford – kicking three goals in a 27-12 loss – before playing all three Tests in France on the wing.
Haggie scored all of New Zealand’s points in a 24-7 series-opening loss to France from a try and two goals, then landed five goals in a 31-22 victory in the second Test. The Kiwis lost the series via a 24-3 defeat in the third encounter.
The 22-year-old was the tour’s top scorer with 155 points (11 tries, 61 goals) from 27 appearances.
Haggie later represented New Zealand Māori against Great Britain in 1958 – also playing for Auckland and featuring in the first-ever Fox Memorial grand final, Otahuhu’s loss to Ponsonby, that year – and Australia in 1961.
