Wellington prop Peter Mellars toured Australia and Papua New Guinea with the Kiwis in 1982.

From the Petone club, Mellars represented Central Districts against France in 1981, and in the midweek Tooth Cup (1981) and KB Cup (1983) competitions in Australia.

Mellars earned a New Zealand call-up in 1982 and made five appearances, scoring on debut against Gold Coast and in his last match against Island Zone. He also played against Central Queensland, an Origin-strength Queensland side and Northern Division.

A respected administrator and manager with Petone Panthers and Wellington Orcas in retirement, Mellars’ son, Vince, played at NRL level for the Warriors, Cronulla and Sydney Roosters from 2003-06.
