Auckland hooker/prop Jim Patterson had a brief but fruitful stint in the New Zealand team in the early-1960s.

Patterson was called up for the 1961 Test series against Australia after performing well at hooker opposite Ian Walsh in the National Coaching School’s 9-4 loss to the tourists in Christchurch, coming in late for the series opener after Tom Reid’s withdrawal due to illness forced a front-row reshuffle.

New Zealand won the first Test 12-10 and lost the second 10-8 with Patterson playing hooker in both. He subsequently represented Auckland against Australia in the last match of the tour, having earlier lined up for his province against Great Britain in 1958 and France in 1960.

Patterson played eight games on the Kiwis’ 1961-62 tour of Britain and France, including the drawn series opener against France – the last of his three Test appearances.

In club football, Patterson played for Ellerslie and Eastern United.
