West Coast forward Norm Griffiths was an imposing figure in the New Zealand pack on the 1930 tour of Australia.
Runanga’s first Kiwi, Griffiths played in nine of the 13 matches across the Tasman (no Tests were played) – including a clash with NSW and two games against Queensland, coming to grips with Australian greats such as George Treweeke, Wally Prigg, Vic Armbruster, Mick Madsen, Herb Steinohrt and Dan Dempsey.
Griffiths played in South Island’s inaugural win over North Island in 1929 and captained the side in 1932, the same year he led West Coast against England. He later coached Runanga, Brunner and South Island, while his nephew, Reese Griffiths, played for New Zealand from 1956-63.
