North Shore Albions half Ivor Stirling played one match for the Kiwis before their 1939 tour of Britain was cancelled due to the outbreak of World War II.

The Auckland rep played halfback in New Zealand’s tour-opening win over St Helens. He subsequently served in the New Zealand Army during the war and played for his province again in 1945.

He is the father of Ken Stirling, the 22-Test Kiwis halfback mainstay of the 1970s.
