Auckland hooker Glenn Taylor toured Australia and Papua New Guinea with the Kiwis in 1978 and made one Test appearance.
A tenure of more than a decade in the Otahuhu first grade ranks from 1970 was broken only by a season at Glenora in 1976. He returned to the Leopards in 1977 and featured in Auckland’s famous ‘grand slam’ achievement – with the provincial side beating Australia, Great Britain and France within three weeks – that year.
Chosen for the trip across the Tasman in ’78, Taylor debuted in the tour-opening loss to Newcastle and was named at hooker for the first Test at the SCG with rake rival Alan Rushton covering a prop shortage. Taylor endured a tough day in the scrums against Australian opponent George Peponis in a 24-2 and Rushton occupied the hooking role for the remaining Tests.
Nevertheless, Taylor finished with 11 total appearances – and earned the dubious distinction of the tour’s most bizarre injury, accidentally stabbed in the foot by an arrow in Port Moresby.
The 27-year-old was one of five Otahuhu players in the New Zealand touring party and featured in Graham Lowe-coached club’s Fox Memorial success and victory over Sydney heavyweight Cronulla-Sutherland in 1978.
