Jack Satherley joined older brother, 1935 Test player Cliff, as a New Zealand rugby league representative with a solitary Test appearance against Australia in 1937, before touring across the Tasman with the Kiwis the following season.
A prominent player for the all-conquering Richmond club, Satherley was originally a five-eighth but moved to hooker and represented Auckland against the 1936 Great Britain tourists.
The 26-year-old was chosen at hooker for the second Test against Australia the following season after New Zealand’s decision to go into the series opener without a specialist hooker contributed to a 12-8 loss. Satherley enjoyed a memorable debut for his country, scoring a try in New Zealand’s 16-15 victory in front of 25,000 supporters at Carlaw Park.
No Tests were played on the Kiwis’ 1938 tour of Australia, but Satherley played four matches – against NSW, North Coast, Queensland and a Group 4 combination at Tamworth.
