Back for another year, and bigger than ever, the 2024 NZRL National Secondary Schools Tournament (NZSS) kicked off what is set to be a huge weekend of rugby league.
A record 49 teams took to 8 fields across two parks this year, Auckland’s Bruce Pulman Park and Walter Massey Park. The biggest NZSS tournament yet, nine new schools entered the mix across the four divisions, with another seven returning after several years away.
With 143 under 12 teams also hitting the park at Avondale Racecourse over the weekend for the Pasifika Wellbeing Carnival, the amount of young talent on show across Auckland will be like never before.
2023’s NZSS champions St. Thomas of Canterbury College, Auckland Girls Grammar School, Aorere College, and St. Paul’s College all returned this year, each looking to stamp their mark even further on the history books.
Day 1 consisted of round-robin matches within the different sections of the Girls Championship and Boys Premiership, while the Boys Championship teams battled it out in grading games before heading into Day 2. The U15 Boys Carnival saw a mix of games both within their sections and crossover games between the sections.
