Long-serving Ponsonby halfback Bill Walsh toured Australia with the New Zealand side in 1919 and played one Test against Australia at home later that year.

Walsh first turned out for Ponsonby in 1914 and debuted for Auckland in 1915. Little provincial football was played during the World War I years, though he did represent Auckland in a big win over Canterbury in 1918.

Chosen to head across the Tasman with the national side in 1919, a tour where no Tests were played, Walsh played five matches – four of them against NSW, lining up opposite Arthur ‘Pony’ Holloway and Albert ‘Ricketty’ Johnston.

He was one of four halfbacks used during the subsequent series against Australia at home – New Zealand’s first Tests in five years – with Walsh featuring in the third encounter at the Domain Cricket Ground in Auckland won 34-23 by the visitors.

Walsh played for Ponsonby until 1924.
