Versatile City Rovers stalwart Maurice Wetherill played in two home series against England and toured Australia twice with the New Zealand team.
Wetherill played for City Rovers as a teenager before serving in World War I. He debuted for Auckland in 1921, starting a provincial representative tenure that spanned 10 seasons.
The 26-year-old was chosen to make his Test debut at stand-off in the 1924 series opener against England, scoring a try in a 16-8 victory at Carlaw Park. That would be Wetherill's only appearance in that series, but he played in 10 of New Zealand's 12 games - at wing or halfback - on the 1925 tour of Australia.
Unavailable for the 1926-27 tour of Britain, Wetherill featured in all three Tests of the 1928 series against England on home soil - the first two on the wing and the third at five-eighth.
The diminutive utility was regarded as an outstanding defender and round out his international career with a handful of appearances on New Zealand's 1930 tour of Australia, Wetherill's last season as a player.
Wetherill took up refereeing and handled five Tests between New Zealand and touring Australian (1935 and '37) and English (1936) teams.
