A member of the trailblazing 'All Golds' team, Auckland forward William Trevarthen featured prominently in New Zealand's first three Test series before taking up a professional contract in England.

From the Thames region, Trevarthen served in the Boer War before representing Auckland in rugby union. He was selected in the 'professional All Blacks' squad for the tour of Britain, playing two of the matches against NSW (under union rules) en route.

Trevarthen played 16 games in Britain, including at second-row and lock in three Tests against Northern Union. He featured in all three Tests against Australia on the way home in the front-row, while he scored two tries in a big win over Brisbane.

He played for Newton Rangers and Auckland upon his return, then featured in all 10 games on New Zealand's 1909 tour of Australia, including all three Tests.

Trevarthen headed to Huddersfield later that year, alongside New Zealand teammates Edgar Wrigley and Con Byrne, and played 52 games in three seasons for the club.
