Richmond and Auckland centre Maurie Robertson featured in New Zealand's first 18 Tests after World War II in succession - including his last seven as captain.
Robertson represented Auckland against the 1946 English tourists before earning selection for the one-off Test, which New Zealand won 13-8.
The 22-year-old played all five Tests on the Kiwis' 1947-48 tour of Britain and France among 27 appearances, and shone in the drawn two-Test series against Australia on tour in 1948 and at home in 1949.
An outstanding defender, succeeded Pat Smith as captain for the 1950 series against Great Britain and scored his first Test try as New Zealand wrapped up a 2-0 sweep. He also scored two tries as Auckland's skipper in a 26-17 loss to the Lions.
Robertson skippered his country to a one-off 16-15 win over France at Carlaw Park in 1951 and on the tour of Britain and France at the end of that season, where he was joined by younger brother Bruce.
He scored another try in the series-opening 21-15 loss to Great Britain among four Test appearances on tour (two alongside Bruce), with injury derailing the French leg of the trip for Robertson.
Robertson had a stint as player-coach of Cunnamulla and represented Brisbane Firsts in 1953, before returning home and enjoying multiple stints as coach of Ellerslie. He coached New Zealand in home series against France in 1964 (won 3-0) and Australia in 1965 (drew 1-1).
The uncle of 1974 Kiwi Wayne Robertson, he was one of the second batch of inductees to the NZRL Legends of League in 2000 - just months after his death.
