Manukau forward Pita Ririnui played one match for New Zealand on the ill-fated 1939 tour of Britain.
Ririnui was a rugby union player who represented Poverty Bay-Bay of Plenty-East Coast against the 1937 Springboks. He switched to rugby league the following year and scored a try in Manukau's clash with touring Sydney club Eastern Suburbs, tangling with champion Australian forwards Ray Stehr, Sid 'Joe' Pearce and Harry Pierce.
He faced Stehr and Pierce again for Manukau in 1938 when a Combined City team visited Auckland, while his reputation grew as one of the standouts in trials for the 1939 Kiwis squad.
Ririnui lined up in the tour-opening win over St Helens, but only one further match was played before the tour was cancelled due to the outbreak of World War II.
He stayed in rugby league throughout the war period and represented North Island against South Island, and New Zealand MΔori against Great Britain in 1946.
