Hulking former King Country and New Zealand Māori rugby union representative Joe Rātima made two tours with the Kiwis seven years apart during the 1950s and played four rugby league Tests for his country.
Rātima switched codes with Ponsonby and earned Kiwis selection for the 1952 tour of Australia, playing four matches and scoring three tries in a 66-7 win over Central West Queensland.
The imposing prop represented New Zealand Māori against American All Stars in 1953, Great Britain in 1954, France in 1955 and played in 13 of their 14 matches on the 1956 tour of Australia, scoring six tries. He also featured in Auckland's win over Great Britain in '54 and France in '55.
Rātima made a belated Test debut in 1958, lining up in the front-row with Henry Maxwell in both matches as New Zealand split its home series with Great Britain.
The 33-year-old went on the following year's tour of Australia and played in the latter two Tests, scoring a try in the 38-10 loss in Brisbane and featuring in the 28-12 victory in Sydney. He also scored two tries in a win over a Clive Churchill-led Brisbane Firsts line-up among seven minor tour match appearances.
