Proving just as gifted and versatile as older brother Henry, Bradford Bulls superstar Robbie Paul played 28 Tests in a Kiwis career spanning 10 seasons.
The Tokoroa-born, Te Atatu Roosters junior - two years Henry's junior - was just 18 when he played for Waitakere City Raiders in the inaugural 1994 Lion Red Cup. He joined Bradford later that year and made his mark at five-eighth and fullback.
Paul exploded during the first Super League season in 1996, starring at halfback for the Bulls after being installed as captain at just 20 years of age. Most memorably, he scored three tries and won the Lance Todd Trophy in a losing team as Bradford went down 40-32 to St Helens in an epic Challenge Cup final.
He debuted for New Zealand off the bench in the inaugural Anzac Test against Super League Australia in 1997, scoring a try in the 34-22 loss in Sydney, while he was an interchange again as the Kiwis rolled Super League Australia 30-12 at North Harbour later that year.
Paul lined up for the Kiwis alongside Henry for the first time in the 1998 Anzac Test, playing five-eighth in a famous 22-16 victory over a full-strength Kangaroos side. He wore the No.6 in all five post-season Tests against Australia and the series win in Great Britain. Paul scored a try in the series-opening win against Great Britain in Huddersfield and two tries in the drawn third clash at Watford.
Henry joined Robbie at Bradford in 1999 and their combination flourished at Test level. Robbie was magnificent at five-eighth in the 20-14 Anzac Test loss (scoring a try) and the 24-22 Tri Nations-opening win against Australia, with Henry at hooker. They teamed up in the halves with Robbie donning the No.7 after injury struck down Stacey Jones, scoring another try in the epic 22-20 loss to the Kangaroos in the final.
Paul played in the 2000 Anzac Test and lined up in five matches at the World Cup, scoring a double in a pool win over Cook Islands and a hat-trick in the quarter-final thrashing of France at halfback, then reverting to the bench for the win over England in the semi and the loss to Australia in the final.
Robbie switched to fullback for the mid-2001 loss to the Kangaroos in Wellington, which doubled as Henry's last match for the Kiwis. He was a strong performer at fullback on the Kiwis' tour at the end of 2002, wearing the No.1 against Wales, scoring a try, and in the first two Tests against Great Britain. He lined up at hooker for his country for the first time in the one-off win over France.
Paul was at hooker against in the 2004 Anzac Test, came off the bench in Tri Nations matches against Australia and Great Britain later that year, and kicked two goals as halfback in a narrow win over France. The last of his 28 Tests was in 2006, coming off the bench for a New Zealand side predominantly made up of Super League-based players in a 46-14 defeat to Great Britain midway through 2006.
Elusive Challenge Cup success arrived in 2000 and he won another final in 2003, while Paul featured in the Bulls' 2001, 2003 and 2005 Super League grand final victories. He had subsequent stints with Huddersfield (2006-07), Salford (2008-09) and Leigh (2010-11), retiring with more than 400 club appearances in Britain to his name.
