A champion of the Auckland club and representative scene, Ron O'Regan played eight Tests for New Zealand from 1983-86.

O'Regan was a five-eighth or centre who gravitated to lock. While still only 19, he represented New Zealand XIII and Auckland against Australia in 1980, while he helped Auckland to a win over France in 1981.

Two off-seasons with English club Barrow included a clash with the 1982 Kangaroos, before earning a maiden Kiwis call-up for the 1983 series against Australia. He debuted at centre in the 16-4 loss in Auckland and came off the bench in the 19-12 boilover victory in Brisbane, then lined up at centre again as Papua New Guinea was put to the sword 60-20 at Carlaw Park.

The City-Newton star moved to Te Atatū and began a long tenure as Auckland captain in 1984. He skippered Auckland to an 18-16 win and New Zealand Māori in an 18-9 loss to Great Britain that year.

Unable to crack a very strong New Zealand Test line-up in the 1984-85 seasons, O'Regan touring Britain and France with the Kiwis in '85. Among 12 appearances he featured at lock in the 22-0 shutout of France in the second Test at Perpignan.

In 1986, he came off the bench in the series opener against Australia, and was at lock again for the third Test defeat at Lang Park as the hosts completed a whitewash. O'Regan played lock in both Tests of the shared series in Papua New Guinea.

He became the first player to bring up 50 appearances for Auckland in 1987.

O'Regan took over as captain-coach of Te Atatū in 1988 and guided the club to its only Fox Memorial grand final triumph that year, as well as a runner-up effort in 1990. As non-playing coach, he took the Roosters to another grand final in 1993 before coaching Waitakere City Raiders in the 1994-95 Lion Red Cup competitions.

Son Daniel played one NRL game for the Warriors in 2009.
