Named at hooker in Wellington's Team of the Century and inducted into the NZRL Legends of League in 2012, Colin O'Neil played 21 Tests for the Kiwis from 1965-71.
The Marist stalwart played the first of a record 74 games for Wellington in 1963, playing against South Africa that year. His initial national call-up came in 1965 when the 22-year-old played in both Tests against the visiting Australian side - opposing captain Ian Walsh - before touring Britain and France at the end of the year.
O'Neil played in the first Test against Great Britain but endured a tough outing in the 7-2 loss, having a try disallowed and being sent off for an attempted foot-trip in the latter stages. He was unseated by Bill Schultz and did not return to the Test line-up until the third Test against France.
The expert scrummager played both Tests against Great Britain in 1966 and all three Tests (among 10 appearances) on the 1967 tour of Australia.
O'Neil ultimately extended his run on consecutive Tests to 18. He featured in all of New Zealand's matches at the 1968 and 1970 World Cups, while he captain in five Tests: home series against Australia in 1969 and Great Britain in 1970.
The veteran's final Test appearance garnered just his fourth victory - a stunning 24-3 upset of Australia in a Carlaw Park bog in 1971. He withdrew from contention for the 'Grand Slam' tour of Britain and France later that year, but he bowed out of football by captain-coaching Marist to the third WRL premiership of his career.
O'Neil later served on the NZRL board of directors and was inducted to the Legends of Wellington Sport in 2011.
