West Coast great Jack Newton played in New Zealand's first 13 Test matches after World War II.

After featuring in West Coast's famous win over the 1946 England side in Greymouth, Newton was selected in the New Zealand pack that laid the platform for a 13-8 victory in the one-off Test at Carlaw Park.

The Runanga prop/second-rower played in 23 games on the Kiwis' 1947-48 tour of Britain and France, scoring nine tries. He played in all six Tests and scored tries in the one-off clash with Wales and the second Test against England.

Newton lined up in both Tests of the 1948 series in Australia and the 1949 series against the green-and-golds at home, which both finished one-all. He rounded out an impressive Test career by featuring in the 2-0 sweep of Great Britain at home in 1950 as a 30-year-old.

'Chang' also represented West Coast against Australia (1949), Great Britain (1950) and France (1951) in consecutive years.

In 1989, Newton was named in the front-row in the 'Best Kiwi Coast Side' to mark West Coast Rugby League's 75th jubilee.
