Another magnificent forward to come off the West Coast production line after World War II, back-rower Frank Mulcare played 18 Tests for New Zealand from 1951-56 and inducted into the NZRL Legends of League in 2007.
From the Ngahere club, Mulcare represented West Coast against Australia in 1949 and France in '51, before being chosen for the Kiwis' 1951-52 tour of Britain and France. The 22-year-old played six Tests on tour, teaming up with champion fellow Coaster Charlie McBride in the second-row and scoring a try in the third encounter with Great Britain.
Mulcare scored tries in the second and third Test wins as New Zealand carved out a historic series victory in Australia in 1952, while he played in all three matches as the Kiwis repeat the dose on home soil in 1953 - dotting down in the dead-rubber loss.
A wonderful player on both sides of the ball, boasting top-shelf ball-running and playmaking ability on top of defensive tenacity, Mulcare guested for the embattled American All Stars during their tour of New Zealand in 1953.
New Zealand went down 2-1 to Great Britain in 1954, but Mulcare scored a fifth Test try in the 20-14 win in the second match on his Wingham Park stomping ground in Greymouth.
Unavailable for the inaugural World Cup and the following season's international schedule, Mulcare returned for the Kiwis' 1956 tour of Australia and played all three Tests at lock.
The beloved character was inducted into the NZRL Legends of League in 2007.
