Ponsonby and Auckland utility back Thomas 'Scotty' McClymont played for New Zealand from 1919-24, while his stints as Kiwis coach between 1928 and 1952 saw him inducted into the NZRL Legends of League in 2007.

McClymont switched to rugby league with the Ponsonby club in 1913 and played on the wing for Auckland against NSW that year and against England in 1914.

A New Zealand call-up came for the 1919 tour of Australia, making seven appearances (no Tests were played) at five-eighth, halfback and centre.

The 28-year-old made his Test debut against the touring England team in 1920, playing in the centres in the second match in between two appearances at stand-off. He also scored a try at pivot in Auckland's historic win over the visitors.

McClymont made another tour of Australia in 1921 (again with no Tests scheduled) and scored five tries in six games.

He was named captain and halfback for New Zealand in the 1924 series opener against England at Carlaw Park, but he was injured late in the 16-8 and missed the remaining matches.

McClymont first served as a New Zealand selector in 1926, while he coached New Zealand in the 1928 home series against England, on the 1938 and 1948 tours of Australia, the 1946 Test against England, on the 1947-48 and 1951-52 tours of Britain and France, and home series against Australia (1949), Great Britain (1950) and France (1951). He was also a long-serving Richmond and Auckland coach.
