Champion West Coast forward Charlie McBride was a second-row mainstay of the New Zealand pack during the post-World War II period, playing 21 consecutive Tests in a career that saw him inducted into the NZRL Legends of League in 2000.
A 21-year-old McBride helped West Coast to a famous 17-8 win over England in 1946, before making his Test debut in New Zealand's 13-8 defeat of the tourists.
The following season he played in all six Tests on the 1947-48 tour of Britain and France, then featured in the drawn two-match series against Australia in 1948, scoring a try in the series-opening win at the SCG, and '49, when he grabbed a double in the first Test victory at the Basin Reserve.
McBride, a mobile workhorse in the back-row, starred as New Zealand swept Great Britain 2-0 in 1950 and beat France in a one-off Test in 1951.
The Blackball and Marist ironman embarked on his second Kiwis tour of Britain and France in 1951-52, crossing for tries in the second Test against Great Britain and the one-off clash with Wales in playing all seven Tests. McBride's last match for New Zealand was against the British Empire combination.
