Versatile ex-Auckland rugby union rep Ronald MacDonald toured Australia twice and represented New Zealand in four Tests from 1909-11.

The Ponsonby rugby union forward was part of Auckland's first-ever rugby league team and played in nine of New Zealand's 10 games on the 1909 tour of Australia. MacDonald featured in all three Tests, playing on the wing in the series-opening win (scoring a try) and the loss in the deciding third clash, and at five-eighth in the second Test. He also made appearances as a second-rower and centre.

In 1910, MacDonald represented Auckland as a centre and New Zealand at halfback against Northern Union, scoring another Test try in a 52-20 defeat.

MacDonald toured Australia again in 1911 as a halfback, making six appearances. At club level he turned out for North Shore Albions and Ponsonby United, while he was Auckland's sole selector in 1911 and was later a New Zealand selector.
