Fearless Auckland back-rower Dean Lonergan's 11-Test Kiwis tenure featured two famous victories over Australia.
The towering Glenora Bears forward broke into the Auckland team in 1986 and was a bolter in New Zealand's squad to tour Australia and Papua New Guinea, playing six minor matches and scoring tries against Wide Bay and North Queensland.
After an off-season with Bramley, the 21-year-old made his Test debut off the bench in a 36-22 win over Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby in 1987 and was a replacement again nine days later as the Kiwis stunned Australia 13-6 at Lang Park.
Lonergan spent 1988 with Canberra Raiders - playing four first-grade games - and starred for Rochdale Hornets during the 1989-90 English winter. He returned to the Kiwis fold in 1990, making two interchange appearances during the home series against Great Britain. He then scored two tries off the bench in the first Test against Papua New Guinea at Goroka and scoring again in his maiden start in the second-row in the Port Moresby-hosted second Test.
He partnered Tawera Nikau in the second-row as New Zealand went down 24-6 to Australia in Wellington to close out its 1990 program.
Longergan scored a try in the 60-6 rout of France to kick off the 1991 international season. He then entered rugby league folklore in the first Test against Australia in Melbourne, left convulsing on the ground after a clash with Steve Roach but later returning to the field to help inspire a 24-8 boilover.
But he would play just one more match for New Zealand, the 44-0 loss in the second Test in Sydney. A hamstring injury forced his withdrawal from the decider.
Lonergan became involved in boxing as a promoter and was the driving force between the Fight For Life charity events. His work with Duco Events included several high-profile boxing bouts, as well as the NRL Auckland Nines.
In the 2012 Queen's Birthday and Diamond Jubilee Honours, Lonergan was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to sport and philanthropy.
