Tongan-born Siosiua Tu'one 'Josh' Liavaa played three matches on the Kiwis' tour of regional Australia during the 1975 World Championships.
The Mount Albert and Northcote forward played for New Zealand MΔori against Great Britain in 1974 and in the inaugural Pacific Cup and against Wales in 1975 - an era when players of Pacific Islands descent but no MΔori heritage regular represented the team - and was chosen in the Kiwis' squad in the latter season.
Liavaa made a tryscoring debut for New Zealand against Central Queensland and made further appearances against Northern Division and North Coast.
He played for Auckland in the 1974-76 AMCO Cup competitions in Australia and in a win against a strong Combined Sydney line-up in 1976.
A policeman and larger-than-life figure who found himself in the public eye in the late-1990s over his scandalous dealings with the Tongan royal family, Liavaa was murdered by a relative in Hawaii in 2014.
