Hawke's Bay's Jim Johnson represented New Zealand against the visiting NSW side in 1913.

A rugby league pioneer in his province, Johnson played for Ahuriri in 1911-12, as well as Hawke's Bay in a series of historic matches against Auckland.

The forward scored tries for Hawke's Bay in losses to NSW and 1912 and '13, earning a call-up to the New Zealand side in the latter year. The hosts were overwhelmed 58-19 in Wellington by a side containing the likes of Harold Horder, Howard Hallett, Billy Cann and Bob Craig, but Johnson managed to again score a try against the tourists.
