Versatile Auckland back Ivan Stewart toured Australia in 1919 and played his sole Test for New Zealand when its trans-Tasman rival visited later that season.Stewart made a two-try debut for New Zealand against Tamworth at halfback. He subsequent played centre in two matches against NSW, before reverting to halfback for a win over Ipswich and two fixtures against Queensland.The City Rovers linchpin was chosen for the fourth Test against the Australian tourists - the fourth different halfback used by New Zealand during the series - and opposed the great Duncan Thompson in a 32-2 loss at Auckland's Domain Cricket Ground.A week later, he was at five-eighth as Auckland went down to Australia 32-8 at the same venue.Stewart featured in Auckland's win over Great Britain in 1920, though he left the field with a collarbone injury.
