George Iles biography

Born: March 28, 1894 - Invercargill
Died: March 27, 1933 - Tauranga
Test record: 4 Tests (1919) - 1 try (3 points)

Newton Rangers winger George Iles played in all four Tests against the brilliant Australian tourists of 1919.

Invercargill-born Iles began his rugby league career with Grafton Athletic in 1914 and moved to Newton in 1916. He debuted for Auckland in 1918 before getting the call-up for New Zealand the following season.

Iles was one of the tryscorers in New Zealand's sole win over Australia in the 1919 series - a 26-10 result in the second Test in Christchurch.

Moving to Tauranga, Iles switched to rugby union and represented Bay of Plenty against the 1921 Springboks. He also was part of the group that got rugby league off the ground in the region in 1922 and played in Bay of Plenty's 29-5 loss to a NSW side that included the likes of Harold Horder and Frank Burge.

Iles died one day before his 39th birthday in 1933 from severe illness.
