Ponsonby United forward Lou Hutt played eight Tests in New Zealand tenure spanning eight seasons, during which time he also had an overseas stint with St Helens.
Starting his senior rugby league journey as a 16-year-old with Ngaruawahia in the Lower Waikato competition, Hutt was barely 20 when he represented Waikato against the 1924 English tourists. The following season, he scored two tries in South Auckland's 57-24 loss to the revered Queensland team.
Hutt moved to Ponsonby late in the 1925 season and debuted for Auckland in 1926, as well as representing North Island and playing in further national trials, but he missed the squad for the Kiwis' 1926-27 tour of Britain.
His opportunity eventually came in 1928, playing all three Tests for New Zealand in a hard-fought 2-1 series loss to England. He also played in Auckland loss and New Zealand XIII's selection's win against the visitors.
Hutt signed with St Helens in 1929 and played 82 games in a two-season stay, while he turned out for Other Nationalities twice against England alongside fellow Kiwis Len Mason, Ernest Hall and Lou Brown.
Returning home with Ponsonby in 1931, he featured in the first two Tests against England in 1932, as well as for England and a President's XIII.
A 31-year-old Hutt lined up in all three Test against the 1935 Australian tourists, scoring a try in New Zealand's 22-14 win in the series opener before Australia took out the remaining two games. He finished his club career with Newton Rangers in 1936.
