Former All Blacks forward Harold 'Circus' Hayward represented New Zealand in rugby league in 1912-13, including as captain on a tour of Australia.

The Thames product was a long-serving Auckland rugby union rep (1903-11) and played one match as a flanker for the All Blacks, scoring a try in a 29-0 win in the third Test in Auckland.

Hayward switched codes in 1912 and quickly won selection in the New Zealand team, touring Australia alongside younger brother Morgan. He played in six of the seven matches, scoring four tries - including two in a victory over Queensland.

Both Hayward brother played twice for Auckland and once for New Zealand against the touring NSW side later in 1912.

'Circus' was named skipper of New Zealand's 1913 tour of Australia. His seven appearances included a brace of tries against Ipswich and another try in a win over Queensland.

That would be Hayward's last foray for New Zealand, though he represented Auckland against NSW later in 1913 and England in 1914. He was reinstated to rugby union after World War I.
