Te Atatu junior and former Warrior Shontayne Hape's 14 Tests for New Zealand during a decorated stint with Bradford Bulls consisted of appearances at centre, wing and lock.

An 18-year-old New Zealand Māori representative against Papua New Guinea in 1999, Hape shaped as an outstanding outside-back prospect for the Warriors after playing 27 NRL games across the 2000-01 seasons - featuring on the win in the club's maiden finals match in the latter season.

But a season-ending ACL injury in the Warriors' first match in 2002 halted his progress and he signed to head to Super League at the end of the year.

A grand final- and Challenge Cup-winning centre with Bradford in 2003, Hape scored 24 tries for the club the following season and earned his first Kiwis call-up for the 2004 Tri Nations campaign. He debuted on the wing in a 22-12 loss to Great Britain at Huddersfield, while he scored tries in a narrow win over France in Carcassonne and a tight defeat to Great Britain at Hull.

Hape emerged from a lengthy injury break to help the Bulls to another Super League triumph in 2005 - scoring 12 tries in as many appearances - before playing a vital role in the Kiwis' watershed Tri Nations success. He lined up in the centres in preliminary losses to Australia and Great Britain, scored a try in a one-off clash with France, and starred at lock in the stunning 24-0 shutout of the Kangaroos in the final at Headingley.

Following a 22-try season for the Bulls in 2006, Hape dotted down from the wing in New Zealand's 20-15 Tri Nations loss to Australia in Melbourne. He was on the flank again in a 34-4 win over Great Britain in Wellington and in the golden point loss to the Kangaroos in the Sydney-hosted final.

Hape came off the bench in the Kiwis' harrowing 58-0 loss to the Kangaroos at the end of 2007, then scored two tries in the series-opening loss to Great Britain at Huddersfield after starting in the centres. He made his last appearance for New Zealand as a winger in the 44-0 second-Test defeat at Hull.

The 27-year-old switched to rugby union at the end of 2008 with Bath and played 13 Tests for England (qualifying on residency grounds) in 2010-11. He had stints with London Irish and Montpellier before hanging up the boots and returning to New Zealand, where he had off-field roles with the Warriors and NZRL.
