Ian Grey's three Tests for New Zealand in the mid-1950s comprised appearances at fullback and in the second-row. He became the second son of a Kiwi to represent his country - father Eric 'Chilla' Grey was a winger in the 1920 series against England.
After moving from Richmond to Point Chevalier, Grey debuted for Auckland in 1951. He represented his province and North Island against Great Britain in 1954 as a lock before getting a Kiwis call-up for the inaugural World Cup.
Grey's only appearance at the tournament was as a makeshift fullback in the 26-6 loss to Great Britain after injuries tore through New Zealand's custodian options (he had filled in at the back when Des White was injured during Auckland's clash with the Lions earlier in the year). He also played in New Zealand's three exhibition matches against Australia in Leigh and California after the World Cup.
The 24-year-old made 11 appearances on the Kiwis' 1955-56 tour of Britain and France, lining up in the second-row in the first Test against Great Britain and scoring two tries in the second Test win over France.
Grey later coached Ponsonby to a Fox Memorial triumph in 1967 and coached Auckland in 1967-68, while he was chairman of the Victorian Rugby League from 1988-93.
