Marist Old Boys fullback/centre/five-eighth Charles Gregory made three overseas tours with the New Zealand team, including one as captain.

After a brief stint with Newton Rangers, Gregory played rugby union for Ponsonby and represented Auckland in 1922-23. He returned to rugby league with Marist in 1924, turned out for Auckland against England that year and broke into the New Zealand squad for the 1925 tour of Australia.

The 24-year-old played eight games, including at fullback in two wins over NSW. He also featured in both of New Zealand's matches against the touring Queensland team later that year.

Gregory played 15 matches on the troubled 1926-27 tour of Britain, including three of the four Tests - the first two against England (he kicked a goal in the second Test loss at Hull) and the one-off clash with Wales.

Overlooked for fellow Aucklander Craddock Dufty for the 1928 series against England, Gregory's fine club form saw him recalled for the 1930 tour of Australia - as captain. With Dufty also in the squad, Gregory's 12 appearances were split between five-eighth and fullback; he kicked four goals in a win over Western Division and scored a try and five goals in a victory against New England.

Gregory bowed out from the playing arena as part of Marist's 1931 Fox Memorial title-winning team, later coaching the club.
