An esteemed former All Black fullback, George Gillett played for and coach the New Zealand rugby league during the code's formative years - as well as touring with the Australasian Kangaroos.
Auckland rep Gillett played eight rugby union Tests for New Zealand among 38 appearances, touring with the 1905-06 'Originals', and featuring in series against Australia in 1907 and Anglo-Welsh in 1908.
Switching codes with Newton Rangers in 1911, Gillett played seven of New Zealand's eight games on the tour of Australia that year, playing in multiple backline positions and at loose forward. He was subsequently invited to tour Britain with the 1911-12 Kangaroos - one of four New Zealanders selected - though he made only four appearances.
Gillett coached New Zealand on its 1912 tour of Australia, while he later turned out for Ponsonby United in 1914.
A multi-code marvel, Gillett also played Australian rules for the Western Australia state team after serving in the Second Boer War with the Australian forces in the early-1900s.
