Hawke's Bay halfback George Smith toured Australia with the New Zealand side in 1911.A long-serving Hawke's Bay rugby union rep, Smith switched codes and lined up at halfback in New Zealand's tour-opening loss to NSW - opposing former Wallaby Chris McKivat, who would lead the Kangaroos to Britain later that year.Smith's only other appearance on tour was as a replacement in a narrow win over Newcastle. He went on to play against visiting NSW teams for Hawke's Bay in 1912 and 1913.
