The grandfather of New Zealand's Team of the Century halfback Stacey Jones, Hone Komanga 'Maunga' Emery carved out a wonderful 23-Test Kiwis tenure of his own in the front-row trenches during the 1960s.
An Auckland and New Zealand MΔori representative in rugby union during the 1950s, Emery switched codes with Glenora and earned Auckland and New Zealand call-ups in 1961.
The 28-year-old made a tryscoring Test debut against Australia in a 12-10 win at Carlaw Park. Emery's long-standing front-row partnership with Sam Edwards began on the tour of Britain and France later that year; he played in five of the six Tests among 21 appearances.
Emery featured prominently in both Tests of New Zealand's 2-0 series victory over the 1962 Lions - scoring a try in the second clash - as the Kiwis pack outshone their vaunted British counterparts. He also scored New Zealand MΔori's only try in a 35-5 loss to the Lions at the Basin Reserve.
He lined up in 13 of the Kiwis' 15 games on the 1963 tour of Australia, including all three Tests, and played for New Zealand against South Africa later that season.
The enforcer scored another Test try in the 1964 series opener against France, starting in all three matches as New Zealand carved out a cleansweep, and played in the first Test against visiting Australia in 1965 but missed the second.
Emery was back on deck to play in all six Tests on the Kiwis' 1965 tour of Britain and France, while he scored seven tries in 16 minor matches - including doubles against Leeds and Barrow. His international swansong came in the first Test against the 1966 Lions; the 33-year-old was replaced by Robert Orchard after the 25-8 loss.
