Wellington fullback/centre Morvin Edwards played 11 Tests for New Zealand, touring Britain and France twice, lining up against Australia four times, and spending six seasons in Sydney with Balmain and Penrith.
As a 20-year-old in 1988, the Upper Hutt Tigers tyro represented Wellington against Great Britain and Australia, and featured in New Zealand MΔori's Pacific Cup triumph. He then had a short stint in England with Swinton.
Edwards played for his province against Australia again in 1989 (and again scored a try) before earning a spot in the Kiwis' squad to tour Britain and France. He played seven games on tour but had to wait until the following season to make his Test debut, coming off the bench in two matches against Great Britain. Edwards also played fullback for New Zealand MΔori against the Lions and captained Wellington to a historic 30-22 win over the visitors from centre, scoring a try.
With incumbent fullback Matthew Ridge prevented from going to Papua New Guinea for the series opener in 1990 following the series against the Lions, Edwards received his maiden Test start and kicked two goals in a 36-4 win. He reverted to the bench for the second Test with Ridge returning, while he slotted in on the wing for a hometown Test appearance in a 24-6 loss to Australia.
Slipping down the Kiwis pecking order, he spent the 1991-92 English winter with high-flying Leeds and returned to the club briefly the following season but left in time to star the 1993 season with Balmain.
Edwards played predominantly on the wing for the Tigers that season with NSW fullback Tim Brasher in the No.1 jersey, but with Ridge injured he was at fullback for all three Tests of the midyear series against Australia.
Selected for another tour of Britain and France in 1993, he featured in the tour-opening Test win over Wales and the demoralising first Test loss to Great Britain at Wembley before being passed over in favour of Dave Watson. Edwards returned as custodian for the one-off clash with France - his last appearance for New Zealand.
Edwards joined Penrith for a four-season stay in 1995, ultimately racking up 64 top-grade appearances with the Tigers and Panthers.
