One of the inaugural batch of NZRL Legends of League inducted in 1995, ultra-versatile Auckland back Cyril Eastlake played 28 Tests for New Zealand from 1951-60 at wing, five-eighth, centre and fullback.
The elusive Ellerslie star represented Auckland against France as a 20-year-old in 1951 and was called up for the Kiwis' tour of Britain and France later that year. Eastlake scored 10 tries in 28 appearance and featured in all seven Tests against Great Britain, Wales, France and British Empire.
He scored a try on debut as a winger in the series opener against Britain and dotted down again at five-eighth in the second Test. By the end of the tour, he had also played Tests at fullback and centre.
The following season, Eastlake lined up at five-eighth in the series-opening loss on New Zealand's tour of Australia, then reverted to the wing and scored tries as the Kiwis took out the rubber with victories in the second and third Tests. He also scored three tries in a win over Central Queensland.
Eastlake was forced to withdraw from the first Test against Australia in 1953 but belatedly played his match for New Zealand on home soil in the third encounter, featuring at five-eighth in an 18-16 loss at Carlaw Park.
On the wing for the 1954 series opener against the Lions, Eastlake captained New Zealand at the inaugural World Cup in France later that year. He played all three matches - all losses - and scored a try against the hosts.
Eastlake stood down from international duty for the 1955 season but returned for the following year's tour of Australia and featured in all three Tests of a cleansweep defeat at wing and centre.
A surprising omission from the 1957 World Cup squad, he was recalled for the 1958 series against the Lions and kicked three goals in both Tests of the drawn series from fullback. The veteran made another tour of Australia in 1959 and played all three Tests in the centres, scoring a try in the series-opening loss and slotting five goals in the dead-rubber victory.
After lining up at fullback in the 1960 series against France at home, Eastlake's international swansong came at the World Cup in England later that year. He was at fullback in a tournament-opening defeat to Great Britain, and back in the centres for the loss to Australia and win over France - kicking three goals in both.
Eastlake was named Ellerslie Eagles' Player of the Century in 2012, five years after he passed away at the age of 77.
