Wellington forward Joe Cootes represented the Kiwis from 1936-38.

After representing Wellington against England in 1936, he was called into the New Zealand team for both Test matches - scoring a try in the 23-11 loss in the second Test at Carlaw Park.

He was retained for the 1937 series against Australia and featured in the 16-15 win in the second Test, as well as New Zealand Māori's victory over the tourists.

Cootes played six matches on the 1938 tour of Australia (no Tests were played), while he was selected for the following season's tour of Britain but was one of just five players who did not turn out in either of the Kiwis' two matches before the tour was cancelled due to the outbreak of WWII.

The veteran later represented New Zealand Māori against the 1946 English tourists.
