Rangi Chase represented New Zealand against Australia in 1937 and on a tour of Australia the following season.

A rugby union player for the Huia club and at representative level for Whanganui, the Taihape product switched to rugby league with Manukau, as did older brother and 1939 Kiwi Tommy - playing alongside the likes of Steve Watene and Jack Hemi - in 1937.

The teenager was chosen in the centres for the series-opening Test against Australia in 1937, a 12-8 loss, then featured on the wing in New Zealand's 16-15 victory in the second Test. He also played in New Zealand Māori's 16-5 upset of the tourists.

The following season, Chase scored a try in North Island's win over their southern counterparts and played seven games on the Kiwis' tour of Australia (no Tests were scheduled). Upon his return he scored three tries for Auckland against Canterbury.

But the bright young star returned to the Whanganui region in 1939 and unsuccessfully applied for reinstatement to rugby union.
