The Kiwi Ferns have confirmed their lineup for this Sunday’s Pacific Championship clash against the Australian Jillaroos at Apollo Projects Stadium in Christchurch. This thrilling encounter, part of a doubleheader with the men’s match, marks the beginning of the Kiwi Ferns’ 2024 Pacific Championship campaign as they continue their journey towards the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
The Kiwi Ferns have emphasized the importance of team unity through tikanga during their camp, fostering deeper connections among the players. After a strong 2023 campaign, the team is ready to carry forward their momentum and is laser-focused on claiming Pacific Championship glory in 2024.
Head Coach Ricky Henry highlighted the squad’s determination: “This group has worked hard to build a strong foundation, and we’re ready to take it to the next level. The Pacific Championship is a crucial step in our preparations for 2026, and we’re aiming to put together a performance that reflects the progress we’ve made.”
The team announcement features exciting new talent, including dual-code star Gayle Broughton, who will make her debut for the Kiwi Ferns. Broughton, a former rugby sevens sensation and Olympic gold medalist, has seamlessly transitioned to rugby league. Known for her agility, playmaking abilities, and leadership on the field, she will bring creativity and flair to the Kiwi Ferns’ attack from the five-eighth position.
“Gayle has proven herself at the highest level of sevens, and we’re excited to see what she brings to our team in rugby league. She’s got the vision, the skill, and a winning mindset that will be invaluable in this campaign,” said Henry.
Joining Broughton as a debutant is Alexis Tauaneai, who was recently honored with the Dragons NRLW Coach’s Award for her outstanding performances. Tauaneai’s hard-hitting style and relentless energy will bolster the forward pack, giving the Ferns even more strength upfront.
Captain Georgia Hale leads a strong squad that includes the powerful Amber Hall and Brianna Clark, while fullback Apii Nicholls and outside backs Abigail Roache and Shanice Parker will provide plenty of attacking options as they take on the world champion Jillaroos.
